I am Dr. V. Mridulla Abirami, a consultant psychiatrist heading the psychiatry outpatient services at Iswarya Hospitals, Chennai. My clinical experience spans more than a decade across several leading corporate hospitals.
I chose psychiatry because I believe physical health alone cannot sustain a fulfilling life. True wellbeing depends on a healthy mind, and helping patients regain that is the foundation of my work.
01
My medical journey began at Annapoorana Medical College, Salem, where I completed my MBBS. In my early clinical years, I met many patients with physical complaints. Their tests were often normal. Yet their distress was very real, and it was closely linked to stress, anxiety or low mood.
This shaped a belief that guides me to this day: true wellbeing depends on a healthy mind. I also saw how deeply patients value the doctor who helps them find that balance. This led me to psychiatry. I completed my MD at Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute.
Over more than a decade, I have practised across several leading corporate hospitals. I currently head the psychiatry outpatient services at Iswarya Hospitals, Chennai. For the past three years, I have also served as an organisational psychiatrist with IT and corporate enterprises, supporting mental health where much of modern stress originates: the workplace.

For the past three years, I have worked as an organisational psychiatrist with IT and corporate enterprises. This work spans employee consultations, manager training, workshops, crisis intervention and on-site wellbeing engagement. It has given me first-hand understanding of how occupational pressures affect mental and physical health.

Treating a physical illness relieves a symptom. Treating the mind often restores a life. As patients recover, they regain their sleep, their relationships, their confidence at work and their sense of self.
Many of my patients have endured their difficulties quietly for months or years before seeking help. Witnessing their recovery is a privilege. The gratitude expressed by patients and their families is uniquely personal and profound, and it remains the reason I find this work so deeply meaningful.
Areas of special interest
I help professionals recognise and address stress, burnout and work-life imbalance early, before they affect health, relationships and performance.
Many patients reach me after multiple consultations and normal investigations, still without relief. When the underlying anxiety is understood and treated, the physical symptoms it drives often resolve. This is among the most rewarding areas of my practice.
Sleep, physical activity, nutrition and self-care are part of every treatment plan. These are principles I follow in my own life, because regular exercise and restorative sleep are among the most powerful supports for mental health.
Background
Professional philosophy
“A healthy mind is the foundation of a fulfilling life.”
My practice integrates evidence-based psychiatric treatment with structured lifestyle care. Where medication is indicated, it helps stabilise symptoms and restore clarity. That period is then used to establish sustainable habits in sleep, physical activity, nutrition and self-care. My aim is lasting recovery that patients can maintain through their own resilience, with medication reviewed and reduced wherever clinically appropriate.
